What those strange abbreviations mean

All teas are classified for clarity (not just the black tea). Adherence to the established classification indeed makes it difficult for some growers. Whole-leaf tea - contains whole leaves, rarely broken.

Whole-leaf teas are made in an orthodox way, retaining maximum aromatic compounds. They must be steeped longer to release the aroma.

  • FOP (Flowery Orange Pekoe)... stems with undeveloped buds

  • FBOP (Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe)... Ceylonese or Indian tea, very aromatic
  • BOP (Broken Orange Pekoe)... semi-leaf, regular tea, strong flavour
  • BT (Broken Tea)... shorter leaves than
  • BOP Fannings (pulp) - broken tea that has fallen through a fine sieve. Used in funnel bags. The flavour and aroma are released quickly after pouring water over it.
