Pu Erh
Pu Erh is a mysterious tea. It used to refer to all pressed teas produced in the Chinese province of Yunnan. Today, only tea fermented afterwards with the help of bacteria and moulds can be found under the name Pu Erh or Pchu-er. Do not be alarmed! Both microorganisms occur naturally on tea leaves. Additionally, fermented tea has a taste which many tea drinkers have to get used to. Some find Pu Erhs enchanting with the first sip, while others get "drunk" on them with prolonged testing. They are strangely earthy.
Loose Pu Erhs can have a strong astringency and bitterness that turns into a long sweetness. Pressed teas of this type tend to be sweet to honey and earthy, bittersweet and only minimally astringent. What is also strange is the fact that, unlike other teas, Pu Erhs benefit from age. The oldest tea tends to be delicate, but also very expensive.
The market can provide tea which is 30 or even 50 years old. However, they are usually well guarded by the Pu Erh specialists and lovers for their private use.
Is Pu-Erh Chinese penicillin?
It is sometimes called so. Due to its unique production method, it contains little theine, but plenty of antioxidants and other health benefits. Dozens of scientific studies have testified to its excellent results in the prevention and treatment of particularly civilisation-related diseases.
The Journal of Science, for example, published a report that Pu Erh shows activity leading to a reduction in blood sugar and fat levels. Oncology Research Featuring Preclinical and Clinical Cancer Therapeutics reported the results of research on rats that demonstrated the same. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry printed an article stating that consumption of Pu Erhu significantly reduces the incidence of coronary and cerebrovascular events and has a non-negligible anti-inflammatory effect.
From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, which has been using Pu Erh for more than 2,000 years, the tea can be sipped all day and for a long time. Those who do so can look forward to...
