Kenya tea
Kenya is a synonym for safari. We know this East African country from travelogues and documentaries - its shores are bathed by the Indian Ocean. But Kenyan tea is also worthy of attention. It is grown in the hills near Nairobi at an altitude of 1200-2000 metres. Chinese tea plants brought to Kenya from Assam in the early 20th century, thrive in volcanic soil and higher altitudes with sufficient rainfall and moderate temperatures.
Perhaps surprisingly, tea is Kenya's main cash crop - it accounts for 26 % of export earnings and about 4 % of GDP. Kenya produces black but also green, yellow and white tea. The latter three are only on order for large buyers. Specialities include Kenyan white matcha. Producers are also focusing on developing new varieties of tea plants. One unique example is purple tea, which contains the pigments of blueberries and raspberries.
