Nepalese tea

Nepal is another country where you should not miss the opportunity to taste tea. The proximity to Darjeeling and similar climatic conditions are reflected in the flavour of Nepalese tea - like those from Darjeeling, they are distinctive and slightly sweet in aftertaste. The country is only able to produce 16,000 tonnes of tea a year, and there is a great demand for it. The main export countries are India, Pakistan, Australia and Germany.

Relatively poor Nepal began cultivating Chinese tea plants in the late 19th century. The first plants were transported from neighbouring Darjeeling and planted in plantations in Illam and Soktim. Today, we can also taste tea from Panchthar, Dhankuta and other locations. In Nepal, 60 % of the tea is grown, harvested and produced by women. They work on small farms affiliated with the Himalayan Orthodox Tea Producers Association (HOTPA). Selected growers are dedicated to organic or organic Fair Trade tea.

Tourists usually go to the landlocked country officially called the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal for its unique nature, Himalayan treks, Buddhist temples and culinary experiences.
