Ginkgo biloba

Ginkgo biloba is called ''jinan dvoulaločný'' in Czech. The history of this prehistoric tree dates back to the protohistoric times. Today, it can be found mainly in China. The so-called living fossil grows up to 40 metres tall, drops its leaves in winter and can be recognised by its unique fan-shaped leaves. Botanists consider them to be more like needles, as the ginkgo is in the middle of the development from needles to leave trees.

The attractiveness of the ginkgo is demonstrated by the fact that its leaf is the symbol of Tokyo. It inspired J. W. Goethe to write the poem and was also included in the book by J. Foglar. The ginkgo biloba leaf is used for medical purposes. Flavonoids, terpenes, organic acids and many other substances help to dilate capillaries. Its considerable antioxidant properties are not neglected either. The dried leaves are made into a decoction, and the fresh leaves into a tincture.
