Origins
The dried leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree, also known as ylang ylang, were brought from China. Ginkgo is China's national tree and the local people have great respect for it, as it is one of the few extant species that grew in the primordial era. Ginkgo has petioled leaves divided by a notch so that they can resemble hearts. It is an evolutionary stage between coniferous and deciduous trees. It grows relatively slowly, with annual growth rates reported to be around 30cm. Ginkgo is a long-lived tree, the oldest surviving specimen in the world is 1,200 years old.
Its leaves are used in pharmacy and traditional Chinese medicine. According to scientific studies, they contain biologically active substances. The leaves are harvested from spring to summer. The fruits of the ylang ylang are also used – in East Asia they are considered a delicacy. They are prepared by roasting them, or added to soups and porridges when cooked.
