We are referring, of course, to rooibos and honeybush. South African tea is becoming popular in Europe.
Most of South Africa is covered by savannahs, deserts and semi-deserts. But the region also boasts three stunning rivers - the Orange, Limpopo and Zambezi. On the last river mentioned you will find the famous Victoria Falls. One of the most developed countries in southern Africa, South Africa is notable for (among other things) the archaeological findings of the human ancestor Australopithecus africanus, who lived 3 million years ago. European colonisation, British rule and the country's struggle for independence have all played a part in its complicated history. Tourists visit the region for its national parks but also for its hyper-modern metropolises such as Johannesburg and Cape Town.
And where are the rooibos and honeybush? Rooibos is made from Cape tea bushes growing wild in the Cederberg Mountains about 250 kilometres from Cape Town. Add to the high demands on soil composition, humidity and altitude the complex growth cycle - tea plants need the seeds to rest in the soil for several years to germinate.
Honeybush (a shrub called Cyclopia intermedia) has so far failed to be grown anywhere other than in the Southern and Eastern Cape of South Africa. It is surprisingly sensitive to pollution from industrial fumes. However, the complex cultivation and processing of both bears fruit.
Their sweet, almost honey-like taste and incredible range of health benefits have won them points with healthy lifestyle enthusiasts from around the globe.
