Brew & Taste

This tea catches the eye with its appearance, aroma and color of its infusion. When you open the bag, you will find tiny, rust-colored needles that smell intesively sweet. The infusion is dark orange to mahogany, the taste is very pleasant, round and sweet.

Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, so it is recommended for infants and also for pregnant and breastfeeding women or seniors.

Because it has an excellent refreshing taste, rooibos is suitable for making iced teas. Flavor your iced tea with lemon, honey or fruit.

Origins

Rooibos Supergrade Organic is an African herbal tea grown according to organic farming principles. It does not contain any heavy metals or their residues. The Cape tea tree (Aspalathus linearis), from which the tea is made, grows only in the Cederberg region and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The mountains, about 250km from Cape Town, have very specific soil and light conditions. These conditions give the redbush, as rooibos is also called, its unique taste and health benefits.

The harvesting of these tea plants is done from the second year on. In early autumn, farmers go up into the hills to cut off the long branches and their needle-like leaves. They are taken to special lines where they are chopped, then fermented. The method is typical of South Africa: farmers pile the plant material into large heaps and leave it to ferment. Of course, they monitor the temperature and humidity. At the end of fermentation, the tea has a mahogany color and an intoxicating, rich aroma. Drying takes place in the sun. The tea is then graded into two groups: Supergrade is a high quality, finely chopped tea, and Choicegrade, which contains whole pieces of rooibos.

Consumer demand for rooibos is increasing year after year. Especially its organic variant enjoys great popularity. Around 15,000 tonnes of rooibos are shipped from South Africa to the world every year.
