Origins
Rooibos Supergrade Organic is an African herbal tea grown according to organic farming principles. It does not contain any heavy metals or their residues. The Cape tea tree (Aspalathus linearis), from which the tea is made, grows only in the Cederberg region and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The mountains, about 250km from Cape Town, have very specific soil and light conditions. These conditions give the redbush, as rooibos is also called, its unique taste and health benefits.
The harvesting of these tea plants is done from the second year on. In early autumn, farmers go up into the hills to cut off the long branches and their needle-like leaves. They are taken to special lines where they are chopped, then fermented. The method is typical of South Africa: farmers pile the plant material into large heaps and leave it to ferment. Of course, they monitor the temperature and humidity. At the end of fermentation, the tea has a mahogany color and an intoxicating, rich aroma. Drying takes place in the sun. The tea is then graded into two groups: Supergrade is a high quality, finely chopped tea, and Choicegrade, which contains whole pieces of rooibos.
Consumer demand for rooibos is increasing year after year. Especially its organic variant enjoys great popularity. Around 15,000 tonnes of rooibos are shipped from South Africa to the world every year.
