Kenya Premium Highland – Black Tea
These tea leaves share some aspects with Assam tea, but once you brew them, you’ll discover their actual character. This black tea has a beautiful amber color with a promise of a fulfilling experience. Which you will, of course, get. Instead of the harsh astringency of other black teas, you can expect a surprisingly mild flavor with notes of citruses, spices, and most importantly a pleasant smoothness.

The Olengurone and Olpusimoru areas are located high in the Kenyan mountains, at altitudes ranging from altitudes of 1,800 to 2,400 meters. During the day, they’re warmed by the harsh equatorial sun, which gradually gives way to fog and cool air. It rains regularly in these areas, but only enough to keep the plants humid enough, without the risk of waterlogging.
These conditions have an amazing effect on the tea plants. They grow slowly here and are given enough time to accumulate a richer and more concentrated spectrum of flavor compounds. This is in contrast to the lowlands, where everything grows quickly and without much coordination. In addition, the red volcanic soil full of minerals gives each sip a very specific depth. It’s a taste that’s difficult to describe, but you’ll definitely recognize it.
The S15/10 cultivar is an interesting variety. It comes from the Assam tea family, but has its own specific characteristics. It contains about 3% caffeine and has few catechins. These are substances that often cause astringency in other black teas, but in this variety, they occur in minimal amounts, so the resulting drink is much milder.
The high-altitude environment has another benefit for tea: growers don’t need chemical sprays. The cold climate and altitude naturally deter pests and diseases, so pesticides can be safely avoided. The tea thus remains pure and its delicate flavor is not overshadowed by anything.
Processing follows traditional methods which have been proven over generations. It begins with the manual selection of the best leaves, followed by gradual withering, rolling, and fermentation. Each step has its own rhythm and requires experienced hands. While commercial teas are made quickly and in large quantities, here they believe in taking their time to achieve maximum quality.
