Brew & Taste

Kenya Embu County Green is a classic green tea with a fresh and slightly astringent taste. The infusion has a light, yellow-green color and a pleasant grassy aroma. This tea will refresh you whenever you need it.

Origins

Tea is Kenya's main cash crop and one of its major sources of income alongside tourism, coffee and flowers. Local farmers produce white, yellow, black and, of course, green teas, on order from major customers.

Chinese tea trees (Camellia sinensis) were first planted in Kenya in 1903 and began to be commercially exported 21 years later. The quality of the tea and its sale is managed by the Kenya Tea Development Agency, which brings together over half a million farmers and nearly 70 processing plants. Most Kenyan tea is produced using the so-called CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) method, in which the leaves are crushed, torn and curled. This product has a homogeneous, strong flavor and is used as a base for tea blends and breakfast teas.

High-quality Kenyan teas, which include Kenya Embu County Green, are produced using traditional methods. The leaves and buds are plucked by hand by workers, allowed to wilt and exposed to high temperatures for short, repeated periods. The resulting green tea is then slowly dried, sorted and packaged. A maximum of 1kg of tea is produced from 4kg of plucked leaves and buds.

Tea farmers in Kenya are doing very well. The volcanic soils are rich in minerals, rainfall is fairly regular throughout the year and the hilly landscape provides the bushes with comfortable temperatures. The long sunny days and tropical climate are also advantageous.
