Origins
Tea connoisseurs need no introduction to China and its famous gardens. The most dominant exporter of mainly green tea's exports were valued at $1.5 billion in 2018. The China Tea Marketing Association estimates that in the same year, Chinese producers produced 2.8 million tons of tea, of which 330,000 tons were exported abroad. According to the statistics, this is about a 10% annual increase. However, the fact that China has been among the world's tea giants for centuries does not mean that it only grows and processes tea leaves for the highest possible volumes. Chinese teas are among the top. Several millennia of experience passed down from one generation to the next by garden owners is unrivalled. And the choices are incredible – white, green, yellow teas, oolongs, shaped in molds, smoked, scented... There are also red teas, which Europenas consider black teas, and additionally fermented Pu Erhs.
Pu Erhs have a distinctive flavor that's considered an acquired taste. But if you can find your way to it, you will forever love them. That's why we recommend starting with Pu Erhs of the highest quality, not to be put off by the specific earthiness or 'moldy' taste of lesser varieties. With China Golden Tippy Pu Erh King Simao you will avoid any such unpleasant experiences.
This rarity was brought from Simao County located in the Chinese province of Yunnan. Simao is one of the places historically associated with the tea trade. The district was the starting point for the transportation of tea from Yunnan, Tibet and India to Dali, Lijiang and Lhasa. The area lies in the subtropical monsoon zone. The rains come very frequently, the climate is humid and the winds are usually mild. The average annual temperature is around 18⁰C, winters tend to be cold, and summers hot.
The climate and weather in Simao have a significant contribution to the uniqueness of China Golden Tippy Pu Erh King Simao. Another part of the credit goes to the hands of the local workers and the skill of the tea garden owners. It is a matter of years of experience to produce a high-quality Pu Erh. Pu Erh is made from intermediate Mao Cha (steamed green tea, pressed into cakes) or directly from sun-dried tea leaves. In this case, the already dry leaves are piled into long stacks, moistened with water and covered with tarpaulins. The steaming process raises the temperature of the tea to 60⁰C and allows it to ferment for up to 3 months. When it reaches the required parameters, workers rake the heaps, let the tea dry, then sort or press it into different shapes. In this case, the leaves were left in loose tea form. So we can enjoy the beautiful golden tips and long, unbroken leaves.
