Origins
The Guria region is a place where tradition and natural wealth come together. Located in the western part of Georgia, it connects the Colchis Plain and the Black Sea. Guria is known for its unique combination of coastal and mountainous landscapes, creating ideal conditions for relaxing holidays, hiking and exploring areas with a beneficial climate.
As well as being the home of Gaba Qvevri red tea, it is also home to the hospitable Gurians who will be happy to show you around their country. The local Oda houses, with their long wooden balconies raised off the ground on stilts of hewn stone, reflect the unique style and tradition of the region. And the Gaba Qvevri tea is as unique as the people who produce it.
The whole process begins with the careful selection of fresh leaves, which undergo a wilting process upon arrival at the factory. It takes approximately 10 hours. The tea is then ready to be rolled, which happens only once to make the leaves as soft as possible.
Now comes the critical part: the leaves are transferred to traditional Qvevri clay pots, where the anaerobic fermentation process begins over several days. That is how the special teas known as Gaba are produced and where the tea acquires its unique character. After fermentation, it goes into rotary dryers where the final aroma of the tea is created. The whole process is finished with a final drying process to ensure optimum consistency and flavor.
