The infusion has a beautiful and vivid red color with golden highlights. Its taste is incredibly intense with varied notes of nuts and grapes with a hint of ripe plums in the finish, underlined by an endless sweetness.
Origins
Japan is the true home of the finest green tea. After all, their entire tea production is 99% made up by green teas. However, the real treasure may lie in the missing 1%. And that is Japan Black Benifuki. Japanese producers noticed the growing popularity of black teas worldwide and decided to act.
In 1965, they combined two varieties of tea trees – Chinese (Sinensis) and Assam (Assamica). Specifically, they chose plants from Darjeeling and Sri Lanka, places known for their premium black tea. After years of refinement, benifuuki was registered in 1993 and has been making tea plantation owners happy ever since. It is very resistant to pests and temperature fluctuations, and its leaves lend the tea a delicious flavor and rich aroma. The name can be loosely translated as ''red wealth and honor''. Although it is widespread throughout Japan, it is most common in Kagoshima Prefecture in the south of Kyushu.
Here, thanks to the natural conditions, which are influenced by active volcanoes led by the Sakurajima volcano, it is possible to grow tea trees organically, without unnecessary human intervention and chemical fertilizers. The tea plants thus take all the nutrients from the mineral-rich earth, which is reflected in the full flavor and aroma of the resulting tea.
The leaves of the benifuuki cultivar are large and firm. After harvesting, they are left to rest for about half a day and then rolled. Fermentation is usually gradual, and the leaves are stored in darkness for at least 3 months in special humidity and temperature-controlled containers. Japan Black Benifuki is thus extraordinary proof that diligence, experience and love for the craft are deservedly crowned with success, which you can enjoy in every cup.
