South India Nilgiri TGFOP – Black Tea
We brought it back from the Blue Mountains. Surrounded by waterfalls, wildlife and mountain pastures, this tea was grown for all who can appreciate its spicy sweetness. South Indian FOP Nilgiri is distinctive and fragrant with a hearty citrus aftertaste. All the credit is due to the unique natural conditions of the mountains of South India and the honest work of local farmers.
Ingredients
100 % Black tea NILGIRIBrew & Taste
Tea from South India has a beautiful, bright golden-orange infusion with a smell of oranges and lemons. Its taste is spicy, sweet and, of course, citrusy. South Indian FOP Nilgiri can be enjoyed for breakfast or a morning snack, flavored with milk and slightly sweetened.
Origins
Nilgiri is more than the origin of this delicious black tea. For people in India, the Blue Mountains – a region on the border of Karnataka and Kerala in the south of the country – also come to mind. At least 24 local peaks rise above altitudes of 2000m. The Nilgiri Hills are part of a UNESCO-protected biosphere reserve. Many artefacts from the prehistoric period have been discovered in the high-altitude steppes there. Today they are housed in the collections of the British Museum.
The black tea of Nilgiri is often compared to Ceylon tea. The leaves are larger, but the infusion has a smoother taste.
The harvest is carried out from January to April and from July to August, once the rainy season is over. Women and girls go to the tea plantations early in the morning to pick suitable tea leaves. After plucking them, they place them in large baskets. Then they go for processing. The farmers let them wilt briefly and roll them between two large metal plates. This breaks down the cellular structure of the leaves and the juice released starts fermentation. In high heat and humidity, the tea changes color, flavor and aroma. When the process is complete the tea is dried using hot air technology.
The abbreviation FOP (Flowery Orange Pekoe) in the name indicates a quality harvest containing young shoots.
