Japanese tea

Japan, your middle name is tea. With a bit of exaggeration, perhaps we can say that no one can imagine the island nation of East Asia without the green leaves of the tea plant. Ceremonies, gardens, masters, tea huts. For the Japanese, tea is an embodiment of moving towards simplicity and understanding the laws of nature and harmony. Although it was smuggled into the country from China in the 8th century by a Buddhist monk along with the tea ceremony technique, Japanese artists, samurais, scholars and emperors have given it a whole new direction.

The first tea plantation in Japan was established at the foot of Mount Hieizan. It rises between Kyoto and Shiga prefectures. Today, tea gardens can be found in this area - south of Tokyo, especially in the provinces of Shizuoka, Kyusu, Kyoto, Uji, Miyazaki or Fujiyama and Kagoshima. According to the processing method, Japanese tea is divided into sencha, bancha, gyokuro, kukicha, genmaicha and special matcha. We have written details in the article called "Tea Journal - Fragrant Journeys in Japan".

Black tea is almost unheard of in this country. It was produced in small quantities until 1972, and now its production is nearly 0 %. On the other hand, Japan produces almost 90,000 tonnes of green tea per year. However, less than 2 % is exported. For the Japanese, tea is an essential part of every day.

Why is Japan worth a visit? Apart from the famous tea, we recommend experiencing the beautiful nature with its astonishing mountains, waterfalls and mystical caves. Shrines set in green hills, traditional gardens on one side and the fastest trains, tallest skyscrapers and most extravagant fashion on the other. That is how Japan looks Japan today.
