Gyokuro green tea
Gyokuro is rightfully one of the best and most sought-after Japanese green teas. It is easy to recognize - its leaves are very narrow, flat, dark green and shiny. The tea tastes sweet, delicate and intoxicating. Yet Gyokuro or Jade Dew can be a gentle caress and an encouragement. The higher theine content, as well as the chlorophyll, is due to the unique way in which the tea plants are grown.
They are covered with shade mats in the last two to three weeks before harvest. This exceptional tea is traditionally grown in the Uji region of Japan, with the more recent additions of Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures. The tea gardens are set in a hilly landscape, and a visit is a dream for any tea lover visiting the country. Japan's tea culture is reflected in its art and architecture. And it is Gyokuro that inspires tea. It is the only one for which the Japanese invented a fifth taste - umami.
