Origins
Yellow mombin (Spondias mombin) is a deciduous tree native to the lowlands of Amazon. Reaching up to 20m in height, its elliptical leaves and abundant branches form a massive canopy. It is planted in hedges because it grows quickly. The bark is wrinkled and looks almost thorny. The sap can cause an allergic skin reaction. Flowers of this tree are white, and the fruit is a yellow plum with a sour taste. They are called Caja in Brazil, Uvos in Peru, Yuplón in Costa Rica, and Coc in Vietnam. They are used as part of many dishes, but can cause nausea or vomiting if consumed in large quantities.
The tree is grown for the fruit (which is rich in iron and vitamins) as well as the leaves and bark. Over time, yellow mombin has become the subject of scientific research and medical studies.
