Origins
There are places that have become so closely associated with a particular scent that it's almost impossible to separate them. One such example is Bulgaria’s Rose Valley and the Damask rose. The area between the Stara Planina and Sredna Gora mountain ranges is one of the most famous growing regions for this exceptionally aromatic plant. It is precisely from here, from the area around the town of Karlovo, that our Organic Damask Rose Petals originate.
The flowers of the Damask rose (Rosa damascena Mill.) are prized above all for their intense yet very delicate fragrance. For hundreds of years, they've been used in the food industry, cosmetics, and perfumery; they're especially important in the production of rose water and precious rose oil.
Why do Damask roses thrive in this particular part of Bulgaria? The Rose Valley offers them an exceptionally favorable combination of fertile soil, a mild climate, and suitable humidity. Together with the long tradition of cultivation among the local people, these conditions have allowed Bulgarian roses to build a reputation far beyond the country’s borders.
The harvesting process also plays a major role in the quality of the final product. The flowers are picked by hand during the blooming season, usually in May and June. That's when the aromatics content is at its peak. Harvesting requires careful handling to ensure that the delicate petals are not accidentally damaged and don't lose their characteristic fragrance.
After harvesting, the petals are immediately sent to special hot-air dryers. The moisture is gradually removed under controlled conditions with the goal of preserving their natural color, scent, and valuable components as much as possible.
And here’s one more reason to treat yourself: these roses come from organic farming. They're certified organic, and no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers are used during the cultivation. So when a piece of Bulgaria’s famous Rose Valley finds its way into your teapot, you can be sure that it was handled with respect to both traditional cultivation methods and the plant itself.
