Neem is one of the names for this revered tree. In India, it is considered the most useful of all trees. Indian lilac (Azadirachta indica) is also known as nimtree, nimba or Pride of India. It's native to India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and can tolerate droughts and very high temperatures.
The tree grows 15-20m, has a round crown and large, up to 40cm long leaves. It produces small, white-green flowers with a pleasant fragrance. The smooth, oval-shaped fruits contain flesh and a single seed. They're pressed to produce oil.
Nem trees can be seen around schools and public buildings or temples in India. In many areas, they are considered weeds, so their spread is subject to control. Locals make the most of the trees – they consume the shoots and flowers as vegetables, press the fruit for oil or make it into insect repellant. The oil is also used to make cosmetics. The bark is used in the production of ropes.
