Origins
The so-called Lion's Mane, known as the Hericium erinaceus, is one of the most interesting and valuable mushrooms we know. Its sporocarps are white or cream and resemble a coral or, with a bit of imagination, a thick lion's mane.
The Lion's mane grows mainly on the trunks and stumps of deciduous trees such as beeches and oaks, especially in the northern hemisphere in Europe, Asia and North America.
However, Chinese and Japanese mushroom pickers come across it more often. That's also why coral mushrooms have been happily collected for thousands of years and included in the kitchen and the pharmacy. Modern science confirms the high content of bioactive substances, namely polysaccharides (beta-glucans), terpenes (hericenones and erinacins), antioxidants and amino acids. The mushroom is also rich in minerals, including zinc, iron, potassium and selenium.
The mushroom can be eaten fresh or dried and is often used in powdered form or as an extract. In the kitchen, its meaty texture makes it similar to meat. According to experts, its flavor can be compared to a delicate lobster or crab.
Overall, the Lion's mane is a fascinating mushroom with multifaceted benefits that deserve attention in Eastern medicine and the modern Western world.
We recommend adding Lion's mane powder to beverages. You can even make tea from it.
