Benefits of goji
Who has not noticed the huge interest in the orange-red berries called goji in recent years? They are also called wolfberries, and legend has it that they give wolves tremendous strength.
Goji is also said to have benefited Tibetan monks for thousands of years, strengthening body and spirit and enhancing their meditative states.
Goji is the fruit of the Chinese Box-thorn and a foreign one. While the foreign box-thorn grows mainly in the north of China, the Chinese box-thorn dominates the southern regions. Although goji has gained the most fame in traditional folk medicine, it has also established its reputation in neighbouring Asian countries such as Vietnam, India, Japan and Korea. The leaves, flowers, bark or root of the box-thorn can also be found here.
In Europe and North America, goji berries became very popular around the turn of the millennium. They became such a bargain item that they became known as ''red diamonds''.
Their flavour is pleasantly sweet, and it is no wonder that many products are made from box-thorns - from juices and liqueurs to various pills and food supplements. They are commonly available in dried form and are a great refreshment for porridge or desserts. They are excellent in tea blends, where goji adds a delicious flavour and has many benefits.
However, those taking blood thinners must limit their consumption. It is always better to consult the attending physician beforehand in such a case.
