Origins
Ginger makes up around 25% of this loose-leaf tea. So let's start with it.
The rhizomes of this perennial plant probably native to China or India have been used in gastronomy and folk medicine for hundreds of years. Botanically, ginger (Zingiber officinale) is classified in the same genus as, for example, turmeric or cardamom. It grows to about 1m in height, has narrow green leaves and yellow flowers. Its name probably dates from the mid-14th century, from the Old English word gingifer.
Ginger is an essential part of many world cuisines. The succulent and fleshy rhizomes are pickled, cooked, added to desserts, used to make wine or dried. They are used in India, Vietnam, China, Korea and Japan. In 2013, global ginger production reached 2,1 million tonnes.
The characteristic aroma and flavor of ginger is mainly due to the presence of essential oils, zingiberene and bisabolene. Ginger also contains significant amounts of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium, and of the vitamins, especially the B vitamins and vitamin C. Another important ingredient in this tea is the fruit of the aronia also know as chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa).
Traditional medicine uses it for its high content of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. The deciduous shrub produces dark, almost black berries that can be eaten raw, juiced, fermented or dried, made into jams, wine or brandy. The North American natives were probably the first to use chokeberries. They're very often grown in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
Goji, the third essential ingredient, has become a common part of the Eastern European diet in recent years. The red fruits of the Chinese curcurrant (Lycium chinense) grow on thorny bushes that are native to northern and western China. Its beneficial properties have been used by the local people for more than 2,000 years. They have an exceptional amount of antioxidants and vitamins C, E and the B vitamins.
