Brew & Taste

Golden milk will turn the drink you stir it in a beautiful, bright orange color. In addition, of course, it enriches it with a taste that is pleasantly sweet, coconut-cinnamon, slightly bitter in undertone. And a hint of ginger comes through – it adds a nice spiciness.

Origins

Why this blend is called Golden Milk is more than clear. Its color is indeed reminiscent of the golden rays of the sun. When it comes into contact with food, it instantly turns gold. And the milk is really there. You can definitely taste it. So let's talk about why you should try Golden Milk and ideally incorporate it into your daily rituals.

It's based on turmeric, the so-called Indian saffron, a spice made by drying and grinding the rootstalks of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa). It is a perennial herb growing up to 1m, with oval leaves and yellow-white flowers. It grows mainly in India, but is also cultivated in China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Peru.

More interesting than what the above-ground part looks like is what the underground part is used for. As we mentioned, it's a thickened rootstalk. It has a yellow to yellow-orange color and a typical 'turmeric' aroma. Because of turmeric's ability to dye almost anything it comes into contact with, it was (and rarely still is) used as a dye. This was even long before people realized that it contained a large number of health benefits and could also be used for culinary and medicinal purposes.

The earliest surviving information on turmeric is more than 5,000 years old. The benefits of consuming turmeric were probably first discovered by the Indians, from whom rumors of its powers spread to China, then on to Europe and beyond. Marco Polo, a sailor, also mentioned turmeric in his diary and compared it to European saffron.

The most important component of turmeric is curcumin, but it also contains essential oils such as sabinene and felandrene, or starch. Curcumin is a substance with high antioxidant potential that has been the subject of many studies and research. For example, it has been shown to help maintain optimal cholesterol levels, positively influence the body's ability to fight inflammation and infection, and help maintain normal brain function.

It is good to know that curcumin isn't easily absorbed into the bloodstream, so it is advisable to combine turmeric with pepper (the piperine in it increases the absorption rate of curcumin) and also with fat-rich foods in which curcumin is soluble.

The recommended daily dose of turmeric is 1-3g, and pregnant women as well as people with diabetes or blood thinner medication should avoid it completely.
