Origins
You may think that Curcuma Latte is a modern invention, that this bright yellow, frothy drink was brought to market by one of the big coffee companies. But the opposite is true. The roots of the turmeric latte, which is also known as ''golden milk'', go deep into the Indian Ayurvedic tradition. We must look at the popularity of turmeric and its combinations with a plethora of spices. In Ayurveda, turmeric is prized for its "ojas", or life-enhancing and energy-boosting properties. Modern science describes that curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has antioxidant properties and the ability to contribute to the normal functioning of the liver, nervous system, digestion and respiratory system.
It is also credited with controlling inflammatory reactions. In Indian cuisine, turmeric is used as a staple spice that adds characteristic color and flavor to many traditional dishes including curries, dhal (lentil soup) and rice dishes. It is an essential component of garam masala, a spice blend central to many Indian recipes. It also plays an essential role in Hindu rituals and ceremonies. For instance, during wedding ceremonies in the Indian subcontinent, the groom and the bride rub turmeric paste on each other's skin in a ceremony known as "haldi". This ritual symbolizes blessing and protection and is considered a sign of prosperity and fertility. The benefits of turmeric, as you can see, have been celebrated by people for a long time.
Curcuma Latte is one way to indulge in all the benefits of this special spice. But in addition to turmeric, this instant powdered drink also contains, for example, coconut sugar. It is a natural sweetener that is extracted from the sap of the flowers of coconut palms. This production process has deep roots in Southeast Asia, where coconut palms are abundant and where the production of coconut sugar is a traditional craft handed down from generation to generation. Coconut sugar is well-known for its richer and fuller flavor profile than beet sugar.
It has a lower glycaemic index, which means it causes a slower rise in blood sugar levels, although it still contains comparable amounts of calories and carbohydrates. In addition, it contains trace amounts of minerals and antioxidants. Just like turmeric and coconut sugar, all other ingredients come from organic farming. When growing coconut palms and spices, farmers were careful to protect the natural environment and did not use industrially produced fertilizers or chemical sprays. As a result, the ingredients from which the Curcuma Latte is made, are labelled as organic.
