After brewing, the water will become an amber-to-mahogany color with a distinct, pleasantly citrusy aroma. The first impression of the taste is the fullness of Keemun black tea with mildly sweet, slightly cocoa-like notes that slowly transform into the fresh notes of bergamot. Roses make the impression milder while adding a subtle floral smoothness as well as an elegant finish. The result is harmonious, lasting, and extremely cultured – ideal for slow mornings or calm, unrushed afternoons.
Origins
The base of this blend is Keemun black tea – one of the most famous Chinese teas – originating from Anhui Province. It's grown in mountainous regions shrouded in frequent fog and high humidity, both of which provide the tea plants with ideal conditions for slow growth. It is precisely these conditions that give the leaves their delicacy, complexity, and characteristic aroma.
Here's a quick reminder: The tea plant (Camellia sinensis) is an evergreen shrub with small, dark green leaves and white flowers with yellow centers. In the wild, it can grow up to several meters tall, but on plantations, workers keep it shorter so they can comfortably pick the youngest leaves. Keemun tea is made from these young leaves and buds, which undergo oxidation after harvesting. This gives the tea its dark color, velvety taste, and subtly sweet, slightly cocoa-like notes.
Black tea contains, for example:
- polyphenols,
- tannins,
- caffeine,
- theaflavins and thearubigins,
- amino acids including L-theanine.
Roses are, of course, a prominent part of the Earl Grey Rose Garden blend. Their flowers are among the oldest plant ingredients used in gastronomy and traditional body care. Roses grow as shrubs or climbing plants; they have thorny stems, deep green leaves, and flowers in various colors ranging from white to pink to dark red. For tea blends, fragrant roses grown in sunny regions – such as China, Bulgaria, or Turkey – are the most frequent pick.
Their aroma is delicate and sweetly floral, and when combined with bergamot, it gives the tea an elegant character. Roses also contain a range of valuable substances and are traditionally associated with promoting women’s well-being and mental comfort. Their recognized health benefits include a positive effect on fertility, normal cardiovascular function, vision, excretion, and skin condition.
Rose flowers contain, for example:
- flavonoids,
- essential oils with a high content of aromatic compounds,
- tannins,
- organic acids,
- B vitamins and vitamin C,
- antioxidants.
The flavor of the entire blend is rounded out by a bergamot aroma inspired by the citrus fruit bergamot (Citrus bergamia), which is grown primarily in southern Italy. Bergamot resembles a small orange with a yellow-green peel. Its intense fragrance comes from essential oil, which gives the tea a fresh citrus note.
