Origins
The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, is one of the most popular tourist locations. Southeast Asia is typical for tropical splendor, as it captivates you with its wildlife and impresses with ancient monuments, as well as tuk-tuks and fish markets, Ceylon's tea plantations are part of its history. The world's top tea producer grows tea on 220,000 hectares, which makes up around 3,3% of the country's total land area. Harvesting, processing and sales employ 600,000 people!
As it stands, modern Ceylon would no longer run properly without producing tea. Ruhuna is a region located in the south of the country. Local tea is always carefully processed and produces small, long and thin leaves. Chinese tea plants are harvested three times a year. Tamil women swiftly work on the hillside plantation – their daily minimum is two bags of tea leaves because they pluck the leaves by hand. From the plantations, the tea goes to a processing farm, where it's broken down and allowed to oxidize naturally. When the fermentation process is complete, the leaves are rolled, dried and crushed.
In addition to high-quality black tea, a true Earl Grey also contains bergamot – the essential oil from a fragrant fruit resembling a large lemon. Its aroma has many health benefits. Once you taste it, you won't mistake it for any other tea.
The lemon zest that goes into this tea comes from organic farming. It's preserved by freeze-drying so it retains the many beneficial substances as well as taste and aroma.
