Origins
This tea arrived to us from a faraway region renowned for its rare, natural produce – we’re talking about Seeyok, a tea garden in the picturesque Mirik valley a few kilometers from the Nepalese border. It lies at altitudes of 1,100-1,800m. It may seem like quite the difference in heights, but it’s this fact combined with the rich mineral soil, frequent rains and foggy mornings alternating with sunny days that create the perfect microclimate for Chinese tea plants (Camellia sinensis).
Thanks to the rain and fog, tea leaves mature slowly and in turn accumulate more desirable substances and uniquely pleasant flavor. Every leaf tip has enough time to fully develop its attractive floral profile which is so loved by tea lovers across the world.
First harvest in Seeyok always happens at the end of February or during March – in other words whenever nature starts to wake up from its winter rest. This so-called First Flush is also the highest prized, as the tea leaves are more concentrated in both essence and pure flavor.
Teas from Darjeeling are unique in more than their taste – they require a unique production method. The harvest is exclusively done by hand to ensure only the youngest leaves and tips are picked. After that, they’re left to wither, rolled, allowed to oxidize and finally dried. With First Flush teas such as Seeyok, the process of oxidation is incomplete to keep the freshness, lightness and floral notes at maximum level.
Since 2004, Darjeeling teas have been labelled with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). In this sense, they’re similar to, for example, French champagne. This label guarantees your tea does actually originate in the designated area in West Bengal and has been processed under the special conditions. PGI protects not only tradition and quality, but also the hard work and perfected craft of local growers and producers. And to us tea lovers, it’s a promise we’re getting a true, authentic Darjeeling.
