Gentia lutea gets its Latin name from the mythical last king of Illyria, Gentius. Only a few people are aware of this ancient Balkan kingdom and its ruler, but we can be grateful for the discovery of the gentian's powers nonetheless.
It is a massive herb with a thick, hollow stem and large leaves. The plant is up to 1m tall and bears tasselled yellow flowers. It grows in mountainous areas, often found in the Alps, the Pyrenees and the aforementioned Balkan Peninsula. Gradually, it has spread to North America and China. In recent years, it has also been used as an ornamental garden flower.
The most useful part, however, is the root. It has a specific flavor and is therefore added, for example, to herbal liqueurs. In the past, it was used to make wine. It is still popular in this respect, especially in France.
But in general, the dried root is mainly used to make tinctures and infusions. Don't drink gentian root tea consecutively for longer than a few weeks. Ideally, consult your physician before use. Pregnant and nursing women should also consult their doctor.
