Experts say that Ceylon Orange Pekoe is smooth and refreshing. In our experience, it's also super stimulating. Many take the moments during preparation of this traditional tea to relax; boiling the water, scooping out the long black leaves, pouring the water and watching the infusion turn into a sparkling amber color. All of these are among the small daily pleasures of genuine tea lovers. Whether it's served with milk or garnished with a slice of lemon after cooling, Ceylon Orange Pekoe will always be one of the top ten black teas.
This tea grows on the slopes of the high mountains of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). Its taste is determined by the altitude, the southwest monsoon rains, and the cool weather between January and March. The Dimbula area, where Ceylon Orange Pekoe comes from, is historically one of the first tea locations in Ceylon.
People who harvest the tea leaves have experience in tea collection and production which is passed from generation to generation. Pekoe class tea consists exclusively of leaf buds, which are plucked without the use of fingernails or any sharp tools, just the bellies of the fingers. That is to avoid mechanical damage to the leaves. The tea is harvested by women, who can daily pick 15-20kg of fresh tea leaves. These are quickly transported for sorting and drying. Then they are rolled, twisted and left to ferment in a warm and humid environment. The green leaves thus become black, already fermented.
