Origins
From Darjeeling, India, an area renowned for its refined tea with a refined finesse and unmistakable character, the black tea of the first harvest of 2026 has just arrived. It comes from the famous Okayti plantation, whose name is synonymous with exceptional quality and luxurious taste. This particular tea, referred to as Moonshine, is one of the true gems. If you’re interested in its origins, read on.
Founded in the 1870s by British colonialists, the Okayti Tea Estate gardens are situated on the verdant slopes of Mirik, about 45km from Darjeeling. At an altitude of 1,200-1,900m, the Chinese tea plants (Camellia sinensis) thrive exceptionally well. They grow in an ideal climate and nutrient-rich soil, shrouded by cool morning mists. It’s precisely these conditions that create the perfect environment for the production of First Flush Darjeelings; the teas from the first spring harvest that are considered the most valuable.
What makes this tea so special? First of all, it’s the way it is harvested and processed. The poetic designation of Moonshine also isn’t there just to catch your attention – it’s earned. It suggests that the two youngest leaves and bud were harvested by workers from the bushes before the sun rose or just after dawn. This is when the tea leaves are at their juiciest and most fragrant. Hand-picking must be extremely careful. It aims to capture the fragility and freshness that only early spring in Darjeeling can offer.
You should also know that Darjeeling Tea is a product with Protected Geographical Indication (GI), which means that only tea that has been grown, harvested and processed in a well-defined area of Darjeeling in West Bengal is allowed to carry the "Darjeeling" label.
In 2004, Darjeeling tea became the first Indian product to achieve GI status. In 2011, this status was also recognized by the European Union. Tea with such a label actually comes from the region and meets strict quality criteria. Compliance with the standards is overseen by the Tea Board of India, which owns the trademark 'Darjeeling'.
