The copper-colored leaves give a dark orange to reddish infusion. Its flavor is fresh, natural, with a touch of citrus and has a pleasant aftertaste.
Origins
Nuwara Elyia is located in the mountains of the Central Province of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). This island nation in Southeast Asia has made its mark on world markets thanks to its tea, coconut and rubber tree plantations. Rice, cassava, sweet potatoes, sugarcane, fruits and spices are also important goods for export.
The high-quality of Nuwara Elyia black tea is due to the subtropical climate with an average annual temperature of 16°C. In the winter, the temperature can indeed drop below freezing overnight, but during the day, the soil and air are warmed very quickly by the tropical sun.
Chinese tea trees (Camellia sinensis) have been grown there since British colonization in the 19th century. After the cinnamon and coffee crops were destroyed by a blight, the British began to establish tea gardens in Ceylon. Today, black tea from this destination is one of the most sought-after in the world. Harvesting is entirely done by women, who set out for the tea plantations before dawn. They pluck the leaves by hand, place them in large bamboo baskets and hand them over for transport to the processing farms. There, the tea spread out on large screens, is waved, rolled and twisted so it can ferment. The natural oxidation of the enzymes under controlled temperature and humidity gives it the desired aroma, color and flavor.
The penultimate step in the production of Ceylon OP HG Lovers Leap Nuwara Eliya tea is drying. This particular process is strictly monitored as well. Finally, the tea is sorted out and packed.
