Black tea has an interesting history in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The island nation in Southeast Asia was famous for growing cinnamon and coffee until the mid-19th century, when their crops were destroyed by a rust epidemic. In 1824, the first tea plants were brought to the country from China by the British, and in 1867 the tea industry in Ceylon was born. The inhabitants quickly discovered that their tea plants, grown high on the hillsides, had exceptional qualities. Tea leaves of unique flavors and colors were suddenly in huge demand on the international market. Ceylon became a major supplier of high-quality tea. It is popular with the English, who serve it traditionally with milk, and the Spanish, for whom it is part of an afternoon siestas with a slice of lemon. Ceylon FOP Candyman Kandy has delicate curly leaves with silvery and colorful tips. It is harvested in February and March or August and September. Its flavor depends on the region it comes from. Teas from Kandy province, the area of the first tea plantations established in Ceylon, have a mild citrus aroma and a tangy yet delicious full-bodied flavor. The tea leaves are carefully selected and fermented. Due to this process, they have an increased caffeine content.
