Origins
Where else to start but with mate, a traditional South American drink made from the leaves of the paraguayan holly (Ilex paraguariensis). It is an evergreen tree that grows up to 15m tall, with dark green, glossy leaves, tiny white flowers and bears small red berries.
The yerba mate is naturally found in the subtropical regions of South America, growing mainly in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and South of Brazil. Members of the indigenous Guaraní and Tupí tribes were so fond of yerba mate leaves that they considered them a gift from the gods. They used them to make a drink not only for pleasure, but also for rituals and important social gatherings. With the arrival of European colonizers in the 16th century, yerba mate made its way overseas. Jesuit missionaries began to cultivate mate systematically, promoting it as an alternative to Asian tea. During the 17th and 18th centuries, it became an important commercial commodity and its popularity spread throughout South America.
Yerba mate contains a number of bioactive compounds, including caffeine, theobromine, theophylline, saponins and polyphenols. In addition, it contains vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, and the minerals magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, silicon, phosphorus. It contributes to the normal functioning of the cardiovascular system, boosts your energy levels, suppresses mental and physical fatigue and contributes to lipid metabolism, making it suitable for people in need of weight control.
Mate has a great partner in this tea – peppermint (Mentha piperita). You’ve probably seen this herb at least once with its characteristic fluffy, aromatic green leaves. It grows up to 30-90cm, blooms with tiny, violet flowers clustered in inflorescences and smells absolutely fabulous. Originally native to Europe, it has now spread throughout the world. It thrives in humid areas that offer plenty of sun. Mint has been used for centuries and was known to the ancient Egyptians, who often added it to baths, or scented mixtures in ancient Greece and Rome. In Europe, mint was used in the Middle Ages due to its ability to support digestion.
Peppermint contains menthol, menthone, flavonoids and tannins. In addition to the benefits mentioned above, it has a positive effect on the immune system and normal respiratory function as well as stress.
