Yerba Mate Detox is full of the signature earthiness, smokiness and slight bitterness, which is tempered by lemon balm. The resulting flavor is mild and smooth. This is due to the unique cultivation method of the Paraguayan holly from which it is made.
Origins
Brazil's southernmost state, with its capital Porto Alegre, mainly exports shoes, tobacco, cars, grain and beef to the world. But Manuacs are more interested in its production of yerba maté, a unique method of processing the leaves of the Paraguayan holly (Ilex paraguariensis). In the case of the local plants, it should be noted that they are grown in shaded plantations in the local hills. As a result, yerba maté from Rio Grande do Sul is one of the most noble varieties in the world.
The leaves of the evergreen tree, which can grow up to 20m, are harvested with the terminal branches. Farmers stuff them by hand into sacks and leave them to ferment naturally. When they consider fermentation finished, they expose them to a short period of high temperature. The material is then dried and coarsely ground. Yerba maté is again fermented in bags for 12-24 months.
The consumption of the drink, which was "discovered" by the Guarani people of South America, has been part of the local culture for hundreds of years. The natives use its ability to increase physical and mental stamina and to improve focus. Folk healers recommend sipping maté to control appetite, regulate metabolism and aid digestion.
Traditionally, maté is prepared and served in a hollowed-out gourd from the calabash tree, and sipped through a straw with a strainer, a bombilla. Maté can be prepared both hot and iced.
The other ingredient in Yerba Mate Detox is thistle. The health benefits of its fruit and seeds have intrigued the ancient Greek physician Disocorides. The crushed ripe seeds can have a positive effect on the liver and metabolism thanks to a substance called silymarin. Traditional medicine also credits them with regulating cardiovascular function and alleviating dizziness.
The last herb in this tea is lemon balm. One of the most essential plants in any herb collections, it is used to relieve stress, promote sleep, and is prescribed by folk healers for digestive cramps.
