Origins
Few teas can be so surprising when you open the package. Such a distinctive aroma, which fully imprints itself on the taste, is truly extraordinary. Legend has it that during the Qing Dynasty, the annual processing of tea leaves there delayed the army's passage between the Wuyi Hills. The tea producers, however, had already contracted orders and ordered their workers to speed things up. They took pine wood, set it on fire and dried the leaves over it, completely negating the tea's original properties.
A new tea variety has emerged, the Lapsang Souchong, which many compare to Laphroaig whisky. The original product comes from the Fujian region of eastern China. However, as demand for it continues to grow, production has also moved to Taiwan. Regardless of location, the production process remains the same. The large Camellia sinensis leaves are carefully selected at harvest, then curled and either roasted directly over pine wood or smoked. The intensity of the ''cold'' method is determined by the distance of the leaves from the smoke. All this takes place in special smokehouses that are so fragrant from years of use that the staff here laugh and claim they could walk to work blind.
The aroma has resin, wood and a little pepper in it. Because of its distinctive characteristics, Lapsang Souchong is used as a seasoning for meat or in Asian soups. The aroma and taste are harmonious, which is why milk and sugar are not commonly added to the tea. Tarry Lapsang Souchong is not a tea for everyone, but if you love the smoky taste of whiskey or grilled meat, you have certainly just found a new favorite.
