Origins
Shatawari, shatavar, or Asparagus racemosus, holds an important place in traditional Indian medicine. Its use has been described in the Ayurvedic texts for thousands of years, especially as a prevention of stomach ulcers and nervous disorders. Modern studies point to a much wider range of uses for this wild treasure.
Shatavari translates into "she who has hundred husbands", which is surely related to the fact that it is a natural phytoestrogen that helps in the proper functioning of the female reproductive system.
Asparagus plant is a shrub that reaches 1-2m in height. It can be found on rocky and gravelly ground at an altitude of around 1300-1400m. It is a climbing perennial with small needle-like leaves. It flowers with white flowers, the fruits are purple berries.
Shatavari should not be used by children under 15 years of age.
