Origins
The history of Mozambican tea growing and processing is quite complicated. Indeed, so is the history of the entire country in Southeast Africa. The Republic of Mozambique is bathed by the waters of the Indian Ocean and it was discovered by Vasco de Gama on his voyages. From 1505-1975, Mozambique was under Portuguese control. And almost immediately after gaining independence, a 15-year civil war broke out.
As far as geography is concerned, the Republic of Mozambique is comparable in size to Turkey and the population isn't an outstanding number. Mozambique has a tropical climate, seasons can be divided into 2 types of weather: frequent rains from October to March and droughts from April to September.
The Monte Metilile tea garden is located at an altitude of 1,100m. Thanks to the rich soil on which the Chinese tea trees (Camellia sinensis) are planted and the ideal temperature and rainfall conditions, it produces tea of exceptional quality. For Mozambique, this is a top-quality tea, and it is certified with the organic label. News of its quality is spreading globally, and the demand is increasing. Monte Metilile is one of the few local gardens to return to prominence after the civil war. A large part of the plantation, uncultivated for over 20 years, has been taken over by our partner Cha de Magoma. Thanks to the careful selection of tea trees, thorough daily work and use of modern machinery, he manages to grow, harvest and produce exquisite tea. The tea leaves are hand-picked, just like other traditional and CTC teas in the world.
This black tea is typical for its finely curled leaves with a high amount of golden tips. Such a beautiful appearance, which is accompanied by a unique taste and specific aroma, can only be achieved by the aforementioned hand-picking and delicate processing. The traditional processing is based on the Chinese method and involves hand-picking, withering, rolling, fermentation, and drying. Finally, the tea is sorted and packed.
