The national flower of Haiti, Jamaican water and a flavour that, with its acidity, puts a smile on your face. All this can be found in just one plant - the hibiscus. Some love it, others rather skip it. However, there is no doubt that it has a lot to offer.
Hibiscus is a beautiful flowering shrub or herb. It has plenty of variations, so you can grow it as a houseplant or show it off to your neighbours in the garden.
The most common way to use hibiscus is in the form of an infusion. The Sudanese hibiscus or hibiscus sabdariffa is mainly used for this purpose. It is an annual shrub that originated in the countries of North Africa and Southeast Asia. However, it is also common in Latin America. It has beautiful bright red flowers, which can easily be made into hibiscus tea by steeping. In Egypt, you will find it under the name carcade and in Mexico as Rosa de Jamaica.
It has a typical sour taste, but it can be easily balanced by adding honey or some sweet fruit. That is also why hibiscus is most often found in tea blends, where it blends perfectly with berries or juicy apples.
Hibiscus is undoubtedly beneficial, but it is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with low blood pressure.
