Benefits of Cornflower
In France, the cornflower has an important role. It represents the memory of war victims, widows and orphans. By pinning its beautifully coloured flower, the French pay tribute to veterans on anniversaries and important days.
Cornflower, Latin Centaurea cyanus, is a blue flowering annual herb. It originally grew only in southwest Asia and southern Europe but has gradually spread to other parts of the world. Today, it can be found throughout Europe, Australia, the American continent, and also in western and central Asia.
It is sensitive to soil quality and the possible use of chemical sprays. Mainly due to higher concentrations of herbicides, its range has been significantly reduced. For example, it is still considered rare in our area, although it is gradually returning to the wild. Cornflower flowers are used in the cosmetic industry as a natural dye or for its relaxing effect on the skin and scalp. Cornflower is an edible herb, which is why you can find it in the culinary arts.
However, you will get the greatest benefits from it in the form of a pickle or tonic. For these purposes, the flowers are dried at low temperatures so that no beneficial substances are destroyed. A decoction of cornflower can be drunk or used in baths. Consumption in normal quantities can last up to eight weeks, after which a shorter break is advised.
