Origins
Yunnan Province is found in southwest China. It is one of the areas famous worldwide for the cultivation of Chinese tea trees (Camellia sinensis). While it is true that black tea has only been produced by local farmers since the mid-20th century, it is still one of the top teas on the market. Yunnan is a mountainous region often visited by tourists. Three of Asia's largest rivers flow through it: the Yangtze, the Mekong and the Salween Rivers. All these factors create excellent conditions for the growth of tea plants. Of course, we must not forget the great care of the tea garden, which its owners modestly provide.
Gold Screw stands out with its long, delicate leaves and a large number of golden tips. It has been produced in Yunnan for over a 1,000 years, originally as green tea. The tea leaves are still harvested by hand on some plantations. They must be picked before the dew falls so they do not ferment prematurely. They are transported in large baskets to the processing farms, where they are dried and rolled. That is followed by fermentation, the process of oxidation of the enzymes, which results in a dark brown to black tea with an intense aroma and flavor. This step determines the final quality of the tea and its price on the market. Therefore, the temperature, length and humidity during the whole fermentation process are strictly monitored. Finally, the tea is dried. This step must be given great attention, as there is a risk of the tea leaves burning or not completely drying. It might lead to molding and therefore the destruction of the entire batch.
