Origins
Only teas harvested and produced in the region of the same name (in West Bengal, India) may use the Darjeeling label. They're called "the champagne of tea", since they're similarly exclusive and sought-after. Since 2004, ''Darjeeling Tea'' has been a registered trademark referring to several plantations in Darjeeling and Kalimpong. In 2020, a logo was created with a picture of a woman holding two tea leaves and a bud. It is a certification trademark for the UK, the US, Australia, Taiwan and Europe.
You can find Darjeeling green, white, black and oolong. They are always the leaves of the Chinese tea tree (Camellia sinensis), which grows in gardens at altitudes between 600-2,000m. The specific climate, high humidity and cool nights provide the tea plants with excellent growing conditions while giving their leaves plenty of time to develop their exquisite flavor and wonderful aroma. The Gayabaree & Millikthong Garden, from which this tea originates, lies in the Mirik Valley. The tea trees are planted by the farmers at an altitude of 500-1500m, in the gentle hills sloping down to the northeast. The plantations cover an area of over 800 hectares and produce 250,000kg of tea annually.
The first harvest of the year (First Flush) is always considered the best and most anticipated. Depending on the weather and the location of the garden, the workers carry it out during March and April, when the tea trees send out tender and beautiful shoots. The tea garden owners process and sell them quickly to preserve their delicate flavor and aroma.
