Origins
Arya Tea Estate is one of Darjeeling’s most respected tea estates. And that’s no coincidence. It was founded as early as 1885 and has since systematically built a reputation as a place where quality is not just a goal, but the standard. The plantations cover an area of 125 hectares at altitudes ranging from 900 to 1,820 meters, with an average altitude of around 1,500 meters, creating ideal conditions for the slow growth of tea plants. And it is precisely this slowness that is key in this case – the longer the leaves take to mature, the more aromatic compounds they absorb.
Darjeeling’s unique microclimate – a combination of mountain mists, intense sunshine, and cool nights – imparts an unmistakable elegance to the tea. Furthermore, Arya Tea Estate operates under organic farming practices, ensuring that every step from cultivation to processing respects natural processes and the balance of the surrounding biome.
An interesting fact that adds another dimension to this garden is its historical connection to Buddhist monks. They played an instrumental role in establishing the first plantations there and instilled in them a commitment to purity, precision, and respect for nature. This approach is still evident at Arya Tea Estate today – in the meticulous work of the pickers, the gentle handling of the leaves, and the philosophy behind the entire processing. White Pearl is produced during the so-called First Flush, the first spring harvest, which connoisseurs consider the most valuable phase of the tea season. After their winter rest, the tea plants release all of their stored energy, nutrients, and aromatic compounds into the leaves. Harvesting is done by hand, exclusively following the 'two leaves and a bud' standard. This means that, alongside the bud, workers pluck only the two youngest leaves. It is precisely this selection that forms the basis of the final quality.
Immediately after harvesting, the leaves undergo very rapid yet gentle processing. They're allowed to wither naturally and then dried in a way that minimizes oxidation and preserves their original character. Handling is kept to a minimum. The goal is not to shape the leaves, but to preserve their natural form and structure. The result is a tea that reflects its origin, time, and human craftsmanship. Darjeeling White Pearl embodies the essence of an early spring in the Himalayas – captured in its purest form.
