China Huang Jin Gui – Oolong
This is the home of legendary teas; The place they get their mild, floral character reminiscent of osmanthus flowers and where gentle, experienced tea masters manually process them. Yes, we mean the mountains of An Xi in Fujian province. And yes, we’re talking about the light Chinese oolong Huang Jin Gui. It’s the perfect tea when you’re not feeling like having a strong, roasted flavor but rather crave something elegant, natural, and slightly floral.
Ingredients
Brew & Taste
When you brew Huang Jin Gui oolong, you’re guaranteed a bright, light gold to slightly amber infusion. Its naturally floral aroma is reminiscent of a freshly bloomed osmanthus, inoffensive but still distinctly pure. With each subsequent infusion, the aroma grows more complex and unfolds new layers, as if the tea was slowly opening up to you and letting you in on a secret about its character.
The taste is light, smooth, and immaculate. In the first sip, you’ll notice the natural, almost spring-like note that quickly melts with a slight natural sweetness. The lasting aftertaste is velvety, floral, and leaves a flowery airiness on the palate. Huang Jin Gui is like a walk in a mountain garden: nothing is pressing down on you, nothing is fighting for your attention, everything is in harmony. What’s more, you can easily steep it repeatedly thanks to the gentle processing – each new infusion will uncover a new floral layer.
Origins
Huang Jin Gui comes from An Xi County in Fujian Province, a region that has made its mark on tea history primarily thanks to oolongs such as Iron Goddess. It is here, on mountain slopes at an altitude of around 1,600 m, that morning mists, clean air, and a mild subtropical climate come together. The leaves do not grow in a hurry here. Slow maturation allows them to concentrate their aroma and flavor components so that the resulting tea is delicate yet rich in taste.
The local soil is rich in minerals and, together with the pure mountain springs, creates an environment in which delicate floral and osmanthus aromas are born. There is no trick or additional flavoring behind it – the Huang Jin Gui (literally Golden Osmanthus) variety has this floral character encoded in its DNA.
The production of Huang Jin Gui combines traditional handcrafting with modern techniques. Farmers carefully pick the leaves, let them wilt slightly, and then partially oxidize them. It’s thanks to this step that the taste of oolong lies between green and black tea. However, oxidation is kept at a ""lighter"" level for this variety to bring out its fresh, floral profile. This is followed by rolling, which gives the leaves their typical shape and helps release aromatic substances, and gentle drying.
An Xi is an area where tea is not only grown as a crop, but as part of the cultural heritage. Centuries of experience are reflected in every step, from the choice of planting location to the final drying of the leaves. Thanks to this, in every cup of Huang Jin Gui you can taste not only the beauty of the mountain landscape and the specific microclimate, but also the long tradition of Chinese oolongs interpreted in a light, innovative floral form.
