Origins

We love to write about green tea. We are fascinated by its flavor, its effects and its many variations. In this case, we have chosen quality leaves with a full, rich flavor. Where does the tea come from and how is it harvested? Read along.

Green tea is extracted from the leaves of the Chinese tea tree (Camellia sinensis), which originally grew in East and Southeast Asia as well as the Indian subcontinent. Today, the plant is cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka and other countries. However, tea plants are also grown in Europe, specifically in the Azores and Georgia.

They are evergreen shrubs or small trees, usually growing up to 1-2m. The leaves are dark green, glossy and measure 4-15cm. Tea trees have white flowers with yellow centres.

The leaves for green tea are usually harvested manually by farmers. It is a labor-heavy process that requires long practice and careful handling. Most often, young, light green leaves with white hairs on the underside are plucked. This is because they contain the highest concentration of beneficial nutrients. It's harvested 3-4 times. After plucking, the leaves should be left to wilt for a while and then processed quickly. Usually by fermentation, shaping and drying. Green tea contains a wide range of biologically active substances including caffeine, L-theanine, polyphenols (powerful antioxidants), vitamin C, zinc, manganese, potassium and folic acid.

Now, a bit about turmeric – the other important ingredient in the turmeric and sour cherry green tea blend. Curcuma longa is a tropical plant native to South Asia, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years. It has specific requirements for climatic conditions – it needs warm and humid locations with plenty of rainfall and at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. However, it can also adapt to partial shade. It can grow up to 1m and has long, narrow leaves with white or green flowers. Most interesting are its bright orange underground roostalks – the very ones used to produce turmeric.

They need to be carefully dug out of the ground to avoid damaging them. They're then cleaned, peeled if necessary, dried and ground into a fine powder. Turmeric contains several bioactive substances, the most important of which is the powerful antioxidant curcumin. However, it also contains essential oils, vitamin C, some B vitamins, iron, manganese and potassium.
