Altamisa (Ambrosia Peruviana) – Herb
This Peruvian herb is quite mysterious. The indigenous people of Peru used it for embalming, and even today, shamans continue to utilize it to invoke visions. Interestingly, you can also find it in authentic absinthe. This herb, known as altamisa, ajenjo, or marcju, can effectively deter bothersome insects.

Origins
The herb called altamisa (Ambrosia peruviana) is classified by botanists in the astraceae family. Folk medicine utilizes every part besides the roots. If you want to buy it in the South American market, ask for marco, artemise, ajenjo, amargo, or perhaps malco. That is the herb's name given by the locals.
You may recognize the small shrubs by their signature scent. Altamisa is an annual herb growing up to 1m, with its stems covered with fine hairs, oval leaves, white flowers, and ovoid fruit. It grows on river banks, forest edges, valleys of the Andes, and coastal areas, especially in Peru. It can also be found at altitudes of 2,700-3,000m.
The plant captivated the Spanish colonizers, who mentioned it in connection with their observations of Native American behaviour. They reportedly kept altamisa with them everywhere they went, using it in dishes, to make salves, juice, or decoctions.
There are also documented reports of its use in embalming the dead and in Peruvian shaman rituals. Altamisa has also come to the attention of scientists in recent years. The research so far looks very promising.
