Origins
The tribes of the Amazon rainforest know they can find everything they need in nature. Chuchuhuasi means "shivering back". The 30m tree (Maytenus laevis), which grows only in the tropical Amazon, has been the focus of scientific attention since 1960. An extract of its reddish bark has been the subject of numerous studies. The Japanese and the Americans have also studied the chemical composition of the unique tree bark. They have discovered alkaloids, catechins, saponins, quinones, organic acids, and other substances.
Chuchuhuasi is an enormous tree whose broad crown forms the canopy of a rainforest. It has large leaves and small white flowers. It grows in the wild in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Colombia but is also beginning to be planted for pharmaceutical purposes. Local people and villagers along the Amazon drink a decoction of the bark three times a day for at least a week. Chuchuhuasi is also drunk as a treat. The bark extract in sugar cane rum, which you can buy in the Amazon under the name ''Jungle drink'', is one of the popular tourist attractions. You can also get it under the name ""Go-juice.""
