Ingredients
100 % UŇA DE GATOBrew & Taste
This herb tastes rather bland. Its infusion has a red color and it can be sipped hot or as a lukewarm beverage.
Origins
Uña de Gato or Vilcacora (Uncaria tomentosa) grows in the Amazon rainforest in an altitude of up to 800m. It is a woody vine that usually reaches 30m in length. The stem is strengthened with wood, and the leaves are either heart-shaped or oval. They grow curved thorns that resemble a cat's claw, hence its name.
Legend has it that a warrior of the Ashaninka tribe discovered the plant's abilities. Badly wounded, he was going through the jungle when he saw an Amazon tiger. He clawed a large vine and licked its nectar. The tiger was so invigorated that it immediately hunted a giant deer. Inspired, the warrior crawled to the vine and drank the liquid. It instantly restored his energy and saved his life.
Vilcacora attracted worldwide interest only after a Polish psychotherapist, Edmund Szeliga, reported on it in Peru. It was not until the end of the 20th century that its abilities became widely known and were taken up by scientific teams in Europe, the USA, China, Russia, and Japan. Biochemical analyses have found several important alkaloids in the plant's inner bark. Vilcacora has thus become the second most popular Peruvian herb after Maca.
People with autoimmune diseases, pregnant and lactating women, and those taking certain types of medications (e.g. protease inhibitors) should be cautious when using Vilcacora. It may lower blood pressure and slow blood clotting. If any of these affect you, consult your doctor.
