Verbena (Herba Verbenae) – Herb
Make a cup of tea from verbena. It has a bitter, slightly astringent taste and contains tannins and certain alkaloids. You will appreciate it after a hard day when you need to restore energy and wind down.
Ingredients
100 % VervainOrigins
Holy herb, wild hyssop or vervain. It has many names. Wherever rumors of its magical powers have reached, folk healers gave it a new name.
Medicinal vervain, or verbena officinalis, is a plant up to 50cm tall with tiny pinkish-white flowers. It grows in sunny locations with plenty of moisture. It is more likely to be found in lowland areas, where it seeks nutrient-rich soil.
Verbena was found in a vast area between the Mediterranean Sea, West Africa and parts of Asia, reaching as far as the Himalayas. Gradually, it became established in other parts of Asia, Europe and Africa. However, it can also be found on the North American continent and in Australia.
The plant was a crucial part of magical rituals in ancient times. Ancient Roman priests dusted the altars of the god Jupiter with vervain and believed it brought love and peace. The Germanic people wore a sprig of this herb around their necks to ward off evil spirits and to find love.
Verbena has a high concentration of important alkaloids, essential oils and enzymes, which are most concetraded in the aerial part. It can be added raw to salads, for example. However, it is often dried and subsequently made into an infusion.
Although there are no known side effects, we recommend (as with other herbs) a reasonable level of use. In case of long-term consumption, we advise a break after about 2 months.
