Did you know that valerian can help you attract coyotes or earthworms and, conversely, drive away deer? Admittedly, it's probably not the most useful information, but you never know.
Valeriana officinalis, as the Latin name for this perennial herb goes, can be found from central and southern Europe to Russia's Ural Mountains. It grows to a height of 2m and is decorated with tiny white or pink flowers from June to August. These were added to perfumes in the 16th century because of their sweet scent.
But it was the valerian root that won the attention of old healers and ancient physicians. Unlike the flowers, it doesn't have a pleasant scent, but a very specific aroma that some may even call a stink. What is certain is that animals go crazy for it and any lazy cat would jump over mountains to get it.
Valerian root has many benefits for the human body. Its abilities were already noticed by Hippocrates and Gallen.
The root is harvested mainly in May. After cleaning, it is dried very slowly at a temperature of around 30°C and then cut into small pieces. You can make a drink, tincture or add the infusion to your bath. Pet owners can make a home-made spray to help calm cats and dogs, for example when travelling or during fireworks.
If you make an infusion of valerian, 2 cups a day for up to 2 months is enough. Do not take the root of the herb without first consulting your doctor if you are prescribed tranquilizers or antidepressants. Furthermore, valerian is not suitable for pregnant or nursing women.
