Dandelion Leaves (Taraxacum Officinale) – Herb
Dandelions. Some hate to see them riddling their flower gardens, others look for them wherever they can. Now, you can enjoy them whenever and wherever you want. Only a few flowers can turn a little girl into a princess in minutes. And fewer still are such tenacious foes for moms trying to wash stains from their children's clothes. Dandelion flower crowns have been woven for as long as we've known them – and dirty clothes came by once kids started playing with the milky substance that oozes from dandelion stems.
Common dandelion, or Taraxacum officinale, is a typical summer flower. In late summer, its fruits ripen, which we all know as fluffy spheres of seeds. Up to 40cm tall, dandelion inhabits virtually the entire northern hemisphere, but prefers temperate zones. Its typical yellow corolla is actually a cluster of up to 300 tiny flowers. Those interested in the perfect English lawn won't be too thrilled to see it, but when it makes a meadow light up with gold, it's a beautiful sight.
Dandelion is an edible plant. You may come across recipes for making dandelion salad, syrup, or wine. The honey from the flower is also delicious and the roasted root is used to make a drink similar to coffee, but without the caffeine. The dried leaves or stems are simply brewed into a slightly bitter decoction. It contains vitamins (K, A, C or B) and other important elements. You can consume it in reasonable doses for up to 8 weeks, after which we advise a break.
